things i learn after watch the social dilemma

a thread
We have changed from the information era to the disinformation era.

The tools that have been created are now beginning to erode the social structure of the way society works.

Changing the way what we think, and who we are is the source of their money.
because we dont pay for the products that we used, advetisers pay for the product that we used, advetisers are the customers and we are the things being sold.

“if you are not paying for the product then you are the product.”
“its the gradual, slight, imperceptible, change in your own behavior and perception that is the product.”

“nothing vast enters the life of mortals without curse” -sophocles

“any sufficientlty advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
what we do on the internet is all monitored, tracked and measured,
that's being fed into a system that keeps making ever-better predictions of what we're going to do and who we are.
everything we've ever done, every click, the videos we've watched, the like buttons. all of that is processed to build a more accurate model. with our data, they create models (like us) that predict our actions.
The 3 main goals of tech companies: engagement goals to increase your usage, growth (to attract large crowds), advertising goals to make as much money as possible.
its manipulation. We're all guinea pigs, they're not trying to use us, we're just zombies and they want us to see more ads so they can make more money. they can influence real-world behavior and emotions without triggering user awareness.
we are moving from a tool-based technology environment to a technology-based environment of addiction and manipulation.

social media is not a tool waiting to be used, it has its own purposes and means of obtaining it using your psychology against you.
we evolved to care whether other people perceive us as good or not. however, have we evolved to be aware of what people think of us? we didn't evolve to receive social approval.
when we type search on google, we will see different results depending on the location. we see the world / information differently because it is based on computer analysis of what is ideal for us.
polarization is very efficient at keeping people online. the algorithm tries to find powerful traps that best match our interests. ex: features recommend for you

conspiracy theories from social media recommendation engines volunteering to present them to people.
false information gave all the companies more money than the truth.

it is not a matter of technology being an existential threat, but the ability of technology to present the worst possibility in society, and the worst possibility is its existential threat.
technology creates mass chaos, anger, incivility, lack of trust, loneliness, alienation, increased polarization, election hacking, populism, inability to focus on real issues.

the technology is both utopian and dystopian.
if this situation persists: civil war, our civilization may be destroyed by willful ignorance, we fail to meet the challenges of climate change, worsening world democracy, destroying the global economy.
companies can focus on making money, what is bad is when there are no regulations or rules and the company acts as the real government.

solution: having laws on digital privacy, we can tax data collection and processing.
