(1/4) Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a good day to remind everyone that asking someone who has suicide ideation about suicide, will not make it more likely to happen. That’s a myth. In fact, we need you to ask us. We need to talk about it and to know someone cares.
(2/4) We need someone to be non judgmental, show some empathy and to listen. It’s also important to make sure we’re safe at that moment. Ask us if we have a plan, make sure we’re not alone, remind us to focus on getting through today and not to think about the future.
(3/4) We know this isn’t comfortable for you, but please, ask us about our feelings. Encourage us to talk. The more we talk, the better. Don’t forget that a simple “how are you?” Can save a life.
(4/4) Here is a good list of things not to do. I’ve experienced them all. Changing the subject hurts the most for me, probably because it’s the one I get the most. It feels like my very real feelings are being brushed aside as if they don’t exist.
