The trick they're pulling here is by simply laying out a disparity, they have discovered discrimination, rather than investigating it and being open to many different possibilities for the disparity. https://twitter.com/wesyang/status/1304085305348194308
There is of course some discrimination in the job market, but the market also places a price on discrimination. You don't make money by leaving talent off the table, either. That's why over time institutions are becoming more diverse, but it's a curve based on time/age.
And then not every culture has the exact same interests and people aren't all going to be going into the same field because they're individuals, they're not seeing their mission in life as sorting themselves just to hit these quotas....
Like this article from Oregon Public Broadcasting. Should visitors to national parks really sort themselves by race until they hit some arbitrary number? Maybe just some people aren't as into parks and that's fine? https://www.opb.org/news/article/oregon-northwest-racism-outdoors-nature-hiking/
The difference between 2.2 and 0.9 and 1.9 is enough for OPB to point the finger and cry racist? I mean come on. Are you going to do this for everything? The percentage of each race at the yoga studio must be proportionate to the city population, etc.?
The goal is to remove barriers and provide equal opportunity, but the more you achieve that, it doesn't necessarily mean that everyone will sort themselves out to population-proportionate statistics because not everyone even wants to do the same things...
We see it with gender too, they call it the gender-equal paradox. Some of the countries with highest levels of gender equality (Nordics) have less gender balance in fields like STEM. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender-equality_paradox#:~:text=The%20gender%2Dequality%20paradox%20describes,Gijsbert%20Stoet%20and%20David%20C.
Not everybody is going to sort themselves and make their life decisions in the same way just so someone can write a headline about gender parity...sometimes people have different interests.
Sometimes it's not "white supremacy" or "patriarchy," sometimes it's just age, and time, and different interests. Life isn't just a battle between people...
Attractiveness advantages are probably 10x more powerful than everything widely discussed but everyone doing the discussions is attractive...they haven't checked their privileges https://twitter.com/adviceforbernie/status/1304115243073900544
