I'm rewatching the Hangman Adam Page segment from last night and this is one of my favourite wrestling segments ever.

It helps that I absolutely adore the guy, as anyone with an ounce of empathy should if they've watched the last 10 months of AEW TV.

Here's why it's so good...
1) The segments starts before Hangman thinks it'll air.

He then says to Tony Schiavone, "it's probably out of frame over here right?" as he tries to hide his drink. Showing the coping mechanism he uses to hide his shame has become a new shame.
2) Schiavone asks, "how are you?"

Hangman gives a bog standard answer about his physical health but Schiavone immediately shuts that down with, "come on now, how are you feeling?"

Hangman take a second, trying to find a way out of answering the questions. Goes on a mini-tangent
3) As Hangman says, "it kinda felt like everyone was holding their breath" he reaches for his drink, previously out of shot. This is where it gets difficult for Hangman.

4) "It wasn't inevitable" that Hangman and Kenny would break up. A call back to his denial from before.
Up until this episode of Dynamite we'd seen Hangman go through various stages of grief.

The shock just before Revolution as he realises that nobody really has his back.

The denial (refusing to attack The Elite when he should have) and denying the problem exists.
The anger, when he exploded and cost Young Bucks the gauntlet match.

The bargaining, saying to himself that if they beat FTR they can reconcile the team. Also shown on BTE as he tried to make amends with the Bucks.

And now where we arrive with hangman in this interview is...
...on the verge of depression.

He needs to realise the reality of the situation. A part of him has done that as is evident in his actions (the aforementioned drink). But outwardly and to himself he hasn't accepted that yet.

What's sad is hitting this depression is inevitable.
Once he does accept the reality, which, given the actions of Kenny and The Bucks, he soon will, he can move on.

Move on to the testing where he begins to seek new solutions. He may well try a new tag team, he may go on a singles run, we don't yet know exactly what that is.
Eventually, Hangman will arrive at acceptance. This likely only comes after defeating Kenny Omega.

What makes Hangman so likeable, isn't just his relatable attitude. It's that he isn't just chasing titles. He's chasing a goal we can all relate to.

Pride in himself.
5) "That's my fault." This shows that Hangman is still in the bargaining stage of grief, on the edge of depression. He is still seeking reconciliation which he will soon find to be pointless.
6) "I know that inside I'm just like everyone else but... I feel like head to toe I'm just full of poison."

They let that sit for a minute and then Schiavone moves on.

What a line, delivered perfectly with absolute confidence in what he's saying an zero confidence in himself.
7) Hangman says he and Kenny will continue to climb the ladder to which Schiavone says, "hang in there."

This is the genius of putting Schiavone with Hangman and JR with Kenny.

Schiavone empathises and cares more about the person than the wrestler. JR is a sport broadcaster.
The interview as a whole is just masterfully acted and plotted. It's exactly what Hangman as a character needed after his biggest ever loss.

He completely blames himself, he sees where he did wrong and we forgive him for it because of how it eats him up.
But, crucially, we also see from the other segments on the night that Kenny and The Bucks have no remorse towards Hangman. It's all about their attitude and their next move for them.

It's genuinely a hard interview to watch even knowing it's all scripted.
It's just so perfectly what it needed to be.

Hangman's story gives me serious Seven Pounds vibes. The stakes are obviously nowhere near as high and Hangman's story will end positively (it's arguable that the ending to Seven Pounds is happy) but similar vibes to me.
Do yourself a favour, if you didn't watch it last night, watch it now.
