Twitter PSA: When you censor words referring to a sensitive/triggering topic, people who have those words muted still see your tweets.
If your goal is to make it easier for people to avoid seeing tweets about triggering or upsetting topics, itâs better to use the whole word.
If your goal is to make it easier for people to avoid seeing tweets about triggering or upsetting topics, itâs better to use the whole word.
Eg: If you were trying to help people avoid tweets about flowers, it would be better to use âflowersâ than âfl**ersâ so that they can mute âflowersâ and keep flower tweets off their timeline.
(Bleeping/censoring slurs is different â thatâs a way to show that you know the word is a slur and that you donât think itâs ok to use slurs.)
(Also, sometimes people bleep/censor words about sensitive topics so that jerks and trolls canât find the tweets in a search. I think thatâs a completely ok thing for people to do to protect themselves.)
(Iâm not saying that itâs wrong to bleep, just that bleeping is counterproductive if your main goal is to make it easier for people to avoid triggering content.)
