Let’s start a thread on how master, fees, and publishing splits work in EDM! I want you guys, both singers & producers, understanding how it works so you can all be protected & knowledgeable. I’ll do more tutorials on this subject as well as it seems to be an important topic ✨
Publishing splits represent the composition aka the writing of a song. It is split amongst the producers & songwriters. For ex. If there is one writer on the topline (lyrics & melody) & one writer on the beat (production) it should be split 50/50.
The master % is owned by the label, artists, & in pop music points are given to producers. For ex. Labels typically keep anywhere from 50-70% then the rest should be split amongst the artists, including vocalists. THIS IS WHERE MOST OF THE $ IS MADE RETAIN UR MASTER 🙏🏻
The only time you won’t retain master is if there is a “Buy-out” that is agreed on. This means the the vocalist agrees to be paid a fee for their share of the master & in return they do not collect royalties on that end. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS.
When you get to a certain point in ur career as I have u can now get fees ON TOP of master & publishing. For example say my fee is $1,500 I would typically ask for a 50% deposit before writing & recording then I would only send my stems when the backend is received.
Lastly, features! If u want ur name on a track do not let them take it off. It is your right as the artist to have your name on it & remember if it goes to radio (like mine did w/o my name) u will not be able to collect performance royalties from places like soundexchange
There are always exceptions to this as it is the Wild West when it comes to agreeing on splits, but stay knowledgeable & do what you can to protect your work even though there will be times where u are not able to. Don’t let this discourage you use it as fuel to keep going💫
