Great @jhueps seminar from @BakingSodaVolc - Disability accommodations in intro level geoscience courses are often used to gatekeep under the guise of departmental “fit” - How do we turn this around?
(1) Use population-specific theory and research to inform practice. Do your homework to know your audience and the disabilities they face, and involve them in decisions about field participation.
(2) Foster students’ sense bonding with their peers. Help them build group cohesion and make sure everyone has a role on the team!
(3) Engage with active learning, not passive lecturing. Use GoPros & iPads to connect to other group members, just watching videos gets boring really quick. Make sure to change out roles (data processing vs. collection) around when possible!
(4) Create messages of achievement and positive change. Students want to know they are learning and doing good.
(5) Advocate toward systemic improvement throughout the broader geoscience community, not in a bubble disconnected from society. Any accessible approach must be embedded in a broader framework of support.
(6) Add CC to your talks using PowerPoint! https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/video-live-captions-subtitles-371bd124-855f-46a9-a923-5371c10f36c5
