A few points:
1
If Britain, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, sets a precedent for arbitrarily ignoring international treaties, how can the international community enforce them in future? How can we compel Iraq or N Korea to follow the rules?

I'm not just talking about trade deals or the EU. Fact is, grown up govts cannot allow this to happen, because it undermines every country's confidence in international law and agreed treaties. On trade, security, nuclear weaponry, everything.

If the aim of this is to show how independent we are: what an appalling failure. We've now got 3 weeks to backtrack or the EU can sanction us. The US has said there's no chance of a UK/US deal if we do this. And the international community is aghast.

If the aim was simply a negotiating tactic, what an appalling failure. All it's done is expose our weakness and trashed any trust in is. And not just for EU negotiations: all those future trade deals with Canada and NZ just got 1000x harder, cos nobody trusts us.

I have no inside knowledge of where this demented idea came from. But at the top of govt sits arch-smasher-of-rulebooks Dom Cummings, who super-predicts all outcomes. And this is where we ended up. Where he got a reputation for brains baffles me.

To save Cummings, without whom apparently the PM can't sit the right round way on a toilet, the govt trashed public trust in the Covid response. Public health experts assert this cost lives. People died to save the job of the idiot who okayed this damn-fool Brexit tactic.

But above all this sits one man, who has ultimate responsibility. For the deal. For the tactics. For the team he appointed. For the relentless ruin of our global reputation
It's all, ultimately, on him.
And he is such an abject failure that it frankly beggars belief.
