All parks are a product of the settler colonial, capitalist society in which we live.

And as the only, as far as I know, historian who has studied Alberta's park system in depth, I can assert that Alberta's Provincial Park system is no different.

No park would exist if the government, on some level, did not think that it would be economically viable.

None of them.

Parks at all levels of government, as many park historians and scholars have shown, need to balance their goals of preservation, recreations, and PROFIT.
So why do we feel the need to ignore the fact that parks are institutions that have MAJOR problems?

Why do we whitewash them? Why do we act like they are infallible institutions? What do you gain from that, @cpawssab? What do we all gain from that?

When we do not acknowledge that #parks are in fact 'for profit, we make it difficult to defend them in the system in which we live RIGHT NOW. Because the folks in charge know they are for profit, and they don't give a fuck that you think otherwise.

#envhist #parkhistory
When we do not acknowledge that #parks are in fact 'for profit,' we make it impossible to think beyond the park model that we have today. It makes it impossible to move forward to a time when parks could possibly be 'not for profit.' We do ourselves a disservice.

Further, to connect it to our current social climate, whitewashing park history and denying that they are 'for profit' is connected to white violence and denial.
It does not acknowledge that parks, as they are right now, are settler colonial institutions that on some level represent racial violence.
Parks are 'for profit' specifically for white settler colonial governments. And using preservation to deflect this fact, is a system that many of us are complicit in.

To conclude, parks are for profit, deal with it. Learn about it. Work honestly within the system in which you exist, so that you can both protect parks and fight to make them better.
We can't work on race relations, if we don't acknowledge structural racism.

We can't protect and improve parks, if we don't acknowledge them as part of a settler colonial, capitalist, for-profit system.
