Would anyone be interested if I were to do a series of my scuba photos? I'm missing diving very much and this might help.
OK here we go.
Here are your protagonists in the Red Sea:
#Soapbubbles
This is our nerdy chums dive gang:
#soapbubbles
Waiting for the night dive, Hurghada. #soapbubbles
Chromodoris elizabethena aka a nudibranch. Love me a bit of macro life. #soapbubbles
Oceanic White Tip / Carcharhinus longimanus. Increasingly rare in the Red Sea, reckoned to have a far higher human kill count than Bull, Mako, White and Tiger sharks combined. :) (Full disclosure: I didn't take this pic, the dive guide did) #soapbubbles
Hammerhead, Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico.
These are super-difficult to photograph as they're really shy and quick. Most of my snaps are fuzzy and far away :) #soapbubbles
Spotted moray (Gymnothorax moringa), Maldives.
There's a dive site called Fish Tank where there are hundreds of different moray eels. It's quite something. #soapbubbles
Failing to spot a massive nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) behind me. #soapbubbles
Rays at Fish Tank, Maldives. #soapbubbles
Schooling bannerfish (Heniochus diphreutes) Maldives. #Soapbubbles
We spent an hour watching this female whale shark (Rhincodon typus) feed under the light of our boat. Lights attract plankton and - if you're lucky - eventually you'll get one of these. #soapbubbles
Hanging out with a baby sealion, Sea of Cortez, Mexico. #soapbubbles
And if I thought fish were quick and hard to photograph...
#soapbubbles
We got to cruise around their little island and check them out on the surface. #Mexico #soapbubbles
And obviously this is one of the best bits about diving which isn't actually diving: #soapbubbles
Scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) These are endangered, so we were very lucky to see a couple. #Mexico #Revillagigedo #soapbubbles
Giant #manta (Mobula birostris) Largest species of ray in the world. Gentle giants, and they love to play if in the right mood. They like you to spray bubbles for them to swim through. #Mexico #soapbubbles
The spots on a manta's belly are as unique as a fingerprint, and conservation experts use them to help ID and track them. #soapbubbles
The rocks around the islands of the Revillagigedo Archipelago in Mexico are often stuffed with piles of juvenile whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus)
One of my most favourite things you can see on a dive: dolphins. These are Tursiops truncatus - common bottlenose at Socorro Island. #soapbubbles #Socorro #Mexico
Mr Bee and me having a disagreement about something on the dive deck. #soapbubbles
Gothic manta. #soapbubbles #Mexico
Another of my favourite things to see, because they're mostly nocturnal and bonkers efficient at hiding: octopus.
Watching them change texture and colour is like nothing you've ever seen. #Chromatophores #Mexico #soapbubbles
When I started diving I only cared about seeing the big stuff, but over the years have really fallen for a lot of the little critters you can see. This is a mantis shrimp. #soapbubbles
Another cephalopod, the cuttlefish. #Maldives #soapbubbles
No matter how many I see, a dive is always better with a turtle. This is a hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) and they're critically endangered. #soapbubbles
And the view up top is often gorgeous too... #Maldives #sunset #soapbubbles
Night dive nudibranch (chromatoris gleniei) #soapbubbles
Heyyyy barracuda! (Sphyraena) #Maldives #soapbubbles
And we've not even touched on the reef fish, which are often the prettiest things you've ever seen. This is a powder-blue tang (Acanthurus leucosternon) #soapbubbles
And everyone's favourite - the anemonefish. This is a Maldivian anemonefish (Amphiprion nigripes) #soapbubbles
Change of tone: this is how fast the weather can change in the tropics. When we dived, it was clear skies and sunshine. Exiting 50 mins later into a monsoon and choppy waves. #SafetyFirst #soapbubbles
It's OK, we all survived. Look! More cute clown fish. #soapbubbles
Our boat stopped off at this deserted atoll and a couple on board got married. #soapbubbles
Mr Bee hating every minute. #soapbubbles
We made a sand whale shark. #soapbubbles
Boxer shrimp (Stenopus hispidu). Properly called a banded coral shrimp, but nicknamed because they raise their claws up in a boxing stance. #soapbubbles
You know you've been around a while when you've got barnacles...
#soapbubbles #Maldives
Clark's anemonefish (Amphiprion clarkii). I also love the variety of anemones you find. This one always makes me think of condoms... #soapbubbles
Black-blotched moray (Uropterygius fasciolatus) #Seychelles #soapbubbles
Frogfish, relative of the anglerfish and quite bonkers-looking.
#seychelles #soapbubbles
The Seychelles also has amazing rock formations.
#soapbubbles
White spotted boxfish. I love boxfishes. Swimming cubes - what's not to love? #soapbubbles
