Science of thinking here...the schools and teachers trying to enforce classroom like rigidity in e-learning have it so wrong. The env you learn in affects recall. If your brain has limited learning as a classroom thing only to be accessed in rigid desks surrounded by whiteboards
Well, then you might be great at recalling the info for a test in that same classroom. Or in the sterile confines of taking the SAT. But you face challenges accessing the same info outside of context. So really, students should be accessing learning in varied locations
In a chair, on a boat. With a goat. Ok, I digress. But the less learning is locked into a specific context, the better students will be at accessing it anytime. Anywhere. I actually optimistically said..hey, maybe remote learning can be a good thing in this way. The pursuit...
The pursuit of knowledge becomes personal. Done in a comfortable place, an everyday place, your bed, your rug, your home beside your cat. It becomes something you do even when the teacher is not watching. It’s integrated with life
My Mum used to be appalled that I could study while laying on my bed listening to headphones. But she let me because she couldn’t fault the grades. I studied at the park, the donut shop, in cars...my boy is currently crouched on the rug in the disaster zone of our playroom
Listening to his teacher. I did my best learning while sprawled out like a cat. (Was there a study indicating ppl may be more receptive to info laying down?) I dunno...I’m not going to stop him. Let kids be comfortable and integrate learning into their lives. It’s a good lesson
This is not all anecdotal. I do have a background in cog sci and education. It just makes sense logically too, when you think of it
I took a class at uni titled: The Science of Thinking, brain science of memory, storage, logic, framing, etc. etc. I tickled me pink, because in a circular, self-referential manner anyone who was truly learning the material should have all the tricks to ace’ing the class.
Anyway, final anecdotal evidence. Students who did great in high school but are on academic probation first quarter in college. Lots of those. Because they were only used to learning & meeting the restrictions and now have to adapt.
