Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. This is a really important opportunity for us to talk about something which is often really difficult to discuss.

In the U.K. in 2018, there were over 6,500 suicides.
This year's statistics have obviously not been published yet, but with national lockdowns and the future uncertain, mental health has been an enormous problem for many people in WiMSoc and around the country.
That means that it's more important now than ever to talk to others and get a good grip on mental health. That's why we're making this post with an easy what-do-I-do if you think you're experiencing symptoms of depression or any other mental health problems.
Step 1:
In the next tweet in this thread is an NHS resource. It's a quick quiz about how you've been feeling the last couple of weeks and it can help you get a picture of where you are.
NHS Mood Self Assess:

Maybe that's made you realise that you could use some support.

In that case, it can be good to learn about depression. This can help what you're feeling become a little less scary and give you some tips about what to do to help.
It's important to talk about depression. Sometimes it can be difficult to reach out to people you know when feeling down - it can be embarrassing or worsen feelings of anxiety. All our committee, especially our Welfare Sec, are here to help and our twitter DMs are always open.
As much as I want you to know that we're 100% happy to talk to you about this sort of thing, there's also an amazing resource called Kooth.

https://www.kooth.com/

As a young person, this is a free resource where you can talk to a counselor whenever you want. How cool is that!
This can help you gain the confidence to reach out to those close to you.

So, you've learned about depression and found some people to build a support network with. Those are two amazing steps! Now it's time to really take care of yourself through this process in an active way.
WiM Soc has already put out a lot of self-care resources (Note our month of instagram posts!) but you can find more right here:

Together, we can overcome. You are strong, brave, and you are in control of your life.
By taking these steps, reaching out, and taking charge you will be in a position to make sure you deal with struggles in the best way you can.

If you're worried, we're here.
