How the BMC has been the #DeathOfDemocracy for a long time : a thread
The BMC has a long history of demolishing illegal structures, however since these are slums where poor people live, not the office of a billionaire actor with political clout and Y+ security, this never gets any coverage. Because let's face it, India does not care about the poor
To those who say Kangana getting a 24 hr notice was unconstitutional, these people have had their entire homes razed down in front of their eyes, and they also got 24-48 hr notices. The only difference is, unlike Kangana, these people can't afford build their broken homes again
In fact there have also been cases where slums and shops have been demolished by the BMC without serving any notices, or despite the stay order of the HC, or before the notice period was to expire. However, because the victims in these cases are poor, no one speaks up for them
Before the BJP criticises the BMC, it is worth mentioning that in 2017, it demolished the huts of 30 families, mostly Dalits, and destroyed and seized all their belongings, only to make way for the Prime Minister's convoy. This is your fakeer, gareeb maa ka beta Prime Minister?
Kangana is not the first actress to have her property damaged by the BMC.
Shatrughan Sinha, actor turned BJP MP had his house razed
Kapil Sharma had his house razed
Arjun Kapoor had his gym demolished
SRK too had his office demolished, imagine if he compared Mumbai to Pakistan
Coming to a far more serious issue, there are 20 million people in Mumbai, and 2 billion litres of sewage is produced everyday. For this, the BMC has employed only 30,000 sewage workers, that's one sewage worker to clean 66,000 litres of sewage
And while the country banned manual scavenging in 1993, and the SC made it a criminal offence in 2013, there are private contractors who hire manual scavengers, which is illegal. These people get no safety gear to do a life-threatening and dehumanizing job
In case of death of manual scavengers, the BMC does not take responsibility or provide compensation to the family, as BMC doesn't directly employ them. Over 600 people die in scavenging every year, 10 times more than soliders. But basic human rights for Dalits isn't patriotic
Meet Sunil Yadav, a Dalit with 6 degrees. No that's not a typo, he has SIX degrees, but had to work as a garbage collector with the BMC. He got fired for exposing the flaws within the system. But no one will hail Sunil like they hail Kangana, because their caste matters
