Recently saw somebody tell a writer they HAD to do character sheets bc you CAN'T write a book if you don't DEEPLY know the characters.
I've gone 10k+ in with a hero named "XX" before.
"Character sheets work for me. You could try that & see if it works for you?" <—Ok to say
I know authors who do detailed biographies, right down to Zodiac signs & how they felt about 3rd gym class before they start writing. That's their process.
If I didn't have to do cover art forms, there's a good chance I wouldn't know what color hair my folks have. My process.
I generally take everything in. Even if another author's process is radically different than mine, there's often a little nugget of "huh, I could try that and see if it works for me". But "YOU HAVE TO DO THIS" is not a thing.
