Ppl most likely to do it are those who are or have

• Older people who’ve lost a spouse
• attempted suicide in past

• family history of suicide

• a friend who committed suicide

• A history of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse

•are unmarried, unskilled, or unemployed

• Ppl with long-term pain/disabling/terminal illness

• ppl inclined to violent or impulsive behavior

• Ppl recently released from a psychiatric institution

A suicidal person almost NEVER tells someone

What signs to always be aware of:

1. Social withdrawal:

Even if suicidal thoughts are not the reason for your loved one becoming closed off, it is sometimes an ideal breeding ground for suicidal thoughts.

2. Extreme Sadness/Moodiness

Depression - especially with regular breakdowns or overly negative thoughts should never be taken lightly.

Remember that Depression is often a hidden illness and suicide is an extreme result

3. Changes in speech/appearance. Suicidal ppl will sometimes start dressing, looking or speaking differently.

A shift toward reckless behaviour/negative or totally care-free thoughts/ slowed speech are red flags.
There are so many others. A person might start putting their affairs in order suddenly.

They might suddenly become nasty and then calm.

We can’t always prevent suicide, but research shows that we can often prevent it.

People lashing out are most often hurting. We MUST:

1. Learn to see past the lashing out and consider the pain that is causing it.

Listen for words in the person’s speech that indicate self-harm or extreme self-hatred.

Often suicide stems from self-hatred or the inability to love yourself.

2. Stay in touch with the person and keep interactions positive, focusing on the good qualities of the person and how important that person is to you and others.

3. Inform the people they live with so they can keep a close eye on signs as well.

4. Create a network plan among all close contacts to form a positive atmosphere where the person is reminded of being valued.

5. And this may be the most important (especially if the person exhibit more than one sign) get them the help they need.

If you think someone is about to carry out any plan:

1. CALL THE POLICE. There are mental health teams available at hospitals 24/7 around the clock as well.

2. Remove them from anything they can use to harm themselves.

3. Tell them how valued and important they are and that you are there for them no matter what. Anything and everything positive and uplifting until police arrive.

Suicide is an extremely traumatizing ordeal. Let’s be ready to prevent it. Remember:

Sometimes a loved one’s nasty interaction with you might be the last point of contact before he/she decides to end it all.

We have the power to see the signs and at least try to do something about it. Taking the signs lightly is just not worth it.

As the ancient Islamic saying goes: “Saving one life is as though saving all of humanity.”

Because having the humanity to spot a fading life is necessary to end up saving it.
