In the darkest time for theater in over a century one of the only glints of light has been the utter irrelevancy of Ben Brantley in our lives. With his “retirement” announced it's now safe to say that ultimately this man is utterly irrelevant to the art form and always has been.
This cultural shut-in, whose aesthetic was cryogenically frozen in 1975, will be remembered for nothing other than having held that particular job. He has contributed no interesting or enlightening perspective on theater or culture in general. While many art, music, dance, film,
TV, and theater critics are known or remembered for how they helped shaped the way we viewed art and the world, this drunken, hateful prune leaves nothing behind but the memory of a man who exercised his thumbs down/thumbs up- live of die power based on whim, grudge, hangovers,
or whatever like some corrupt Roman emperor. Good riddance, @nytbenbrantley
PS. He will also be remembered for his transphobic remarks in his review of "Head Over Heels" and getting tossed out of K-Pop for making racist remarks about Asians. Oh, and passing out drunk during shows he was supposedly reviewing.
