With regards to the discourse on Peranakan food and Malay food, it’s really telling and problematic to distinguish Peranakan food as requiring more “labour” and quality ingredients, implying that Malay food does not possess and require the same level of complexity and labour.
Also with regards to cutting ulam with the right technique, that’s not particularly Peranakan lah pls I also learned it. And foraging from your own garden isn’t special either?
Imagine thinking that Peranakan food is justified in its far more expensive price points cause of “labour” and “ingredients” instead of reasons such as... idk... differing social status and respect given to the two communities/the demeaning of native communities and their foods.
Acknowledging shared culinary history or that your food is greatly influenced by another culture is not that difficult? One of my favourite Malay foods, Nasi Kerabu, was greatly influenced by a similar dish in Thailand, which makes sense due to a shared border in North Malaysia.
Nobody is denying that Peranakan food has intricate dishes. But so does each culture, it’s not special in that, sorry. And we just don’t know you’re so allergic to acknowledging its origins in Malay food 😕

It’s true I can’t cook though. 🤪 https://twitter.com/cryptoecongames/status/1304081286168936448
Many cultures have really intricate foods! My mum takes a whole day to cook her rendang, with prepping done the day before. Also I’m a terrible cook but my mum is a great one and she has stronger words to say about this topic :)
Also the conversation about this is not new and is fundamentally about power dynamics and erasure.

If I can’t cook, Karen doesn’t understand power dynamics with the hot take that defending Peranakan culture is equivalent to saying black lives matter (.....🥵)
Anyway I’m actually going to have expensive Peranakan food tomorrow that I can’t usually afford thanks to a treat by a gallery. 😅Very grateful as a plebeian who can’t cook that I get to taste such exquisite dishes.
Malay food is cheaper cause I don’t have my own garden to forage from :( So if I want bunga telang, I can find it in Tampines. If I want daun kaduk, I can find it in Paya Lebar outside PLQ mall. (This tweet is a joke but it is also true that you can find these plants there..)
