The Quadram Institute in #Norwich is one of 19 UK labs sequencing #coronavirus genomes. As the #RuleOfSix comes into force on Monday, the world-leading work taking place here could help us out of lockdown.

Just like humans, the #coronavirus has genetic material, but has only 15 genes in its genome instead of our 20,000. There are different types of coronavirus swishing around

The technology at Quadram Institute can map, or sequence, all the different genes in the #coronavirus and compare complete genome sequences

Once all the different versions of the #coronavirus have been sequenced, scientists can build up a picture of what is happening across the country

COG-UK ( @CovidGenomicsUK) has sequenced nearly 52,000 viruses - that’s nearly 50% of all the SARS-CoV-2 genomes sequenced globally

The Quadram's @Justin_OGrady is running the #Covid19 Genome Sequencing project in #Norwich
The team’s findings have shown that there are different types of the virus spreading around the country, and different types spreading around #Norfolk

Knowing about the different versions of the #coronavirus can help us control future outbreaks

If there are multiple cases of #Covid19 from a specific place, the team can sequence these genomes quickly. If they are the same type, control measures can then be considered to stop an outbreak.
