Rise of Magadh-part II (Haraynka Dynasty)
Ajatshatru:The dare devil(495-462 BC)
Ajatshatru was eldest son of Bimbisar who aggressively persuaded imperial policy of his father.
He proved himself a fearless warrior and claimed succession of Bimbisar.
Bimbisar was over
Ambitious and followed expansionism which resulted in nearly 500 wives and several daughter ,sons.
Ajatshatru faced strong opposition from Koshala Devi, first wife of Bimbisar. Koshala Devi was most influencing queen as she was princes of Koshal ans brought Kashi in dowry which
fetched ₹1lac per annum.several other half brothers of Ajatshatru hindered his way to claim the throne. Chellena, the mother of Ajatshatru was a Licchavi princes of Vajji(Vaishali), along with her paternal kinship conspired against Bimbisar.
Sooner Ajatshatru got successful
jailing Bimbisar and killed him.
Soon after his death he claimed the crown and Kashi which deeply enraged Koshala Devi ane her brother Prasenjeet, King of Koshala.
Prasenjeet declared a war against Ajatshatru but lost the battle, he had to marry off his daughter with Ajatshatru
to make peace with him.
Presenjeet was critically condemned for this act and ousted from power by his Senapati.
Prasenjeet feed to Magadh to seek help from his son-in-law but died out of fatigue and stress before reaching Magadh.
This constrained Ajatshatru, and he took Koshal
Under complete subordination of Magadh.
After death of Bimbisar, Ajatshatru became invincible and he started eyeing his own material kinship, Vashali.
As per Budhist Litrature, there was a jewel mine in Himalayan region which was divided between Vaishali and Magadh on 50-50
basis. Ajatshatru was no more interested for half share, he declared war against his material kinship and totally annihilated them.
After winning Vaishali, he made it hin new capital.
He established a modern city Patliputra near Vaishali.
Haryanka dynasty started declining
after death of Ajatshatru in in 462 century. The last ruler of Imperial Haryanka was Kalashoka who is brutally killed by thrusting dagger on his throat in year 345.
They killer of Kalashoka was his commander-in chief who close his aid.
Bimbisar's relationship with Gautam Buddha:Ajatshatru was liberal in religious views, and extended Royal patronage towards Vaishnavism, Budhism and Jainism.
Buddha got enlightened in Bodh Gaya, close to Vaishali.
Mahaparinirvana of Buddha shattered Ajatshatru, he organized the
first Buddhist Council at Rajgriha.
