Today's #WorldSuicidePreventionDay
. I chose "yes, I live," 18 years ago, a choice I felt was permanent & inalienable. 5 years ago, I had to consciously make it again.
I was durable. Productive. Happy. How did it rear its head again?
Social media can snap you like a twig.

Social media can snap you like a twig.
I had to relearn the lessons I learned at 20.
Transient feelings can feel permanent.
Feeling out of place can feel permanent.
Feeling seen as someone you're not can feel permanent.
Emotional situations that have no concrete resolution can lead to a decision to invent one.

I had to relearn how to choose yes, I live, but it was stranger than before, because before I had taught myself that a temporary moment would eventually pass.
On social media, those moments have jibbering, gleeful life of their own and can exist forever.

I had to learn when it was okay to look away from the sun; I had to learn to lean into my in-person relationships for reality.
More teens than ever are growing up with social media and the sort of permanent hum of impossible emotional solutions.

Many haven't yet learned that oftentimes, the person on the other side of the screen is rooting for them to be a disaster. Many don't yet have a good in-person network.
And in 2020, many of them can't get away from a bad one.
So what do I say this year, on this day?

If you have people who love you in real life, remember to let them ground you.
Remember that there will be people who love you. You might not have found them yet, and you may not be able to leave your situation and find your friends yet, but they are out there and waiting.
Remember that there will be people who love you. You might not have found them yet, and you may not be able to leave your situation and find your friends yet, but they are out there and waiting.
Remember that there are one million different versions of you waiting to happen, in one million different zip codes, and that suicide stops that in its tracks.
And remember there's folks you can reach out to that will help you make the transient feeling pass: 1-800-273-TALK.
And remember there's folks you can reach out to that will help you make the transient feeling pass: 1-800-273-TALK.
Finally, I don't know you, but I believe in you. I've seen hundreds of people work their way into lives they love, and I believe that you can get there too.
I believe you can be a hero in your own life.
