just been rejected for ANOTHER job that honestly I was overqualified for. It’s so fucked that the museum industry is such a hostile place to enter that even after two degrees and so much volunteering I can’t even get an interview for what should be an entry level job🤡
I’m gonna add an addition to this because it’s getting a little bit of traction. A masters degree shouldn’t be necessary to find a job in the sector. Countless voluntary hours of work should not be necessary. We need investment into adequate entry level positions, (1/x)
into adequate grad schemes, apprenticeships, work experience, and any other career routes which are not focused on traditional academia.
I’m privileged that I have the opportunity to gain a degree studying which I love, but there are so many amazing people out (2/x)
who would make make amazing contributions to the sector even though they’ve not approached museums and galleries in the way which is seen “right”.
Whether or not the industry is dying is definitely up for debate, but for certain organisations need to reevaluate (3/x)
their commitment to a new generation of workers and empower them to remain enthusiastic about remaining in the sector (4/4)
