*Trigger Warning* #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #WSPD

A Thread 👇

If you haven't found yourself in the place where the ending of life seems a viable, if the not the only, option, then suicide or suicidal thoughts can be very hard to comprehend.
I say this as someone who had a close friend end their life 10 years ago. Then I couldn't understand how they got to that place.

Now I can.

I had no idea when I grieved & questioned everything I thought I knew, that a few years later I'd find myself in similar battle.
For me the pain, heartache, darkness and despair of mental illness took me (on too many occasions) to the edge of cliff or beside a deep dark hole and I wanted and willed myself to give into both.

To give up on life.

To check out.

I lost hope. I lost faith.
I almost lost life, my very being and breathing.

What takes some of us to that place is for each of us unique & sometimes unknown. But it is (I think) almost always accompanied by a deep pain, sorrow, sadness, fear or despair from which we believe there is no rest or escape.
Across the world, one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds.

That haunts me.

I know *that* darkness.

I want you to know today if you are struggling with life that you are not alone.

And yet I know that it probably feels like you are alone.
Your pain is real.

Your hurt deserves to be recognised.

Your despair is not unknown.

You are not invisible.

AND - YOUR LIFE IS HUGELY VALUABLE.
Please, please know “the end” is not the way out of all of this.

THERE IS HOPE.

But I know it feels distant or you can't even begin to see it right now.

I recognise that sense of hopelessness and the weariness of life that makes every breath seem overwhelming.
THERE IS HOPE.

You have a place in this world and we need you here.

Please, please if you are in the place today do one thing - tell someone.

Tell someone you know - family member, friend, work colleague.

Tell someone you can trust - Health Care Professional or Charity
Tell someone you don't know - lift the phone to @samaritans & talk to them.

Telling someone won't fix it, I know that. But it is a step towards the light. The light is still there, even if you can't find it. The darkness doesn't need to win. The darkness does not deserve to win
You deserve to live.

There will be other steps to take but for today take this one step, please. Allow someone else a window into your world, as hard as that might be. Allow them to take the next step with you, please.

THERE IS HOPE.
