1. The Govt is in danger of getting itself back into a mess on testing strategy because of the scientists. They are mistakenly stuck on this line no test is better than a bad test. First of all there are 230 commercialised rapid antigen and antibody tests we could be using.
2. Second, 70% of people with the virus are asymptomatic. They can be as contagious as someone in ICU but seem fine. They are not being tested. Even a bad test, identifying even a small number of asymptomatic cases, is better than no test.
3. Lab-based tests are the gold standard, true. But we can never deliver mass testing without rapid on the spot tests. Solution, which we at @InstituteGC have been arguing for all summer, is that any positive result with a rapid test be backed up by a lab test.
4. Right now, rule of six rule may be sensible. But with the mass testing regime we advocate we wouldn’t need it, and would be able to plan, with confidence, for a relatively normal Christmas. Come on @MattHancock you’ve got this 😉.
