On the Garrick Club issue, it strikes me as a bit sad that men wanting a place where they can be together with other men is looked on as weird and disreputable. Objecting to such things is very WEIRD in the sociological sense of that word.
(WEIRD in the latter sense is a shorthand for Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic).

I'm interested in the psychology of people who desperately want access to institutions which they fundamentally don't seem to like very much, cf. liberals seeking to overthrow established teaching within CofE or RCC. Why not just start your own X if you don't like the existing X?
