Whom to hire first in a startup? 5 key points to look out for - (a thread)
(1/5) Be clear of your vision. Look for hunger and passion specifically to create a dent. Optimise for attitude, adaptability, and energy. Rather than just the skill.
(2) Be clear of the culture - values and behaviours of the org you are setting up. And hire for super-strong fit for the same. The early hires will ensure the rest of the org is also a great culture fit.
3/5 - Hire for the head of the function. But someone who can build the nuts and bolts. After all, they will be doing the first iteration of all the work themselves. This way, they will also know what to look for in their team.
4/5 - Be ready to spend a lot of time with them. Learning and growing with them. The working camaraderie will be important for the next decade of your life! And far into the future.
5/5 - Get them to make the decisions. While the tendency as a founder is to want to make many of those calls, unless you build a culture of getting the team to own up to decisions and outcomes, you will never build a force-multiplying team.
These were all critical almost a decade back while building Urban Ladder. These are critical now - deja vu as I build up the Antler team. P.S: Look out for the key open profiles end of the month!
