in regards to daffy’s character change in the ‘50’s, i’m not so much opposed to making him greedy as i am to making him purposefully unlikable. i think actively having the audience try to root against him is what really sours things (for me anyway)
likewise, being a total 100% screwball can result in being equally unlikable too. but you can have him be greedy/self-centered and still mostly likable! just look at YOU OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES or WHAT MAKES DAFFY DUCK. he’s greedy/egotistical but you’re not trained to hate him
i’ve definitely warmed up to his greedier side for sure, and i get that you can’t have another bugs bunny clone constantly outsmarting adversaries and being the smooth talker, but i still have yet to be completely on board with that era of daffy cartoons
personal taste is definitely a big factor in this LOL. my favorite daffy is by far the 1944-1946 “passionate” era with tashlin and clampett’s daffy where he’s exuberant about EVERYTHING and not gratingly obnoxious, but i’m sure there are people who are as opposed to that as i am
to the ‘50’s jones/freleng daffy. and also don’t get me wrong, the jones/freleng ‘50’s cartoons are GREAT, they’re just not my cup of tea but i still really appreciate and value them. it just doesn’t align with my tastes as much as others and that’s totally fine
i have no idea where i’m going with this LOL i just wanted to put my thoughts out there. i’d been holding off on watching every single daffy cartoon and have made that a mission again so i’ve been going through the late ‘50’s cartoons. the speedy and daffy days slowly approach me
