On 19 May 1780, darkness enveloped New England. The sky turned red. Some people believed it was the end of the world. It was so dark that a person could not see their hand held a few inches before their eyes & the sky could not be distinguished from the earth.

Reports of a strange glow in the sky came from across Europe shortly after midnight on 1 July 1908. Londoners were intrigued to see a pink phosphorescent night sky over the city. People who had retired awoke confused as the strange pink glow shone into their bedrooms.

The same ruddy luminescence was reported over Belgium in 1908. One golf game in England almost went on until four in the morning under the nocturnal red glow. The Times of London was inundated with letters from readers from all over the UK to report the curious red 'skyglow'.
