Why does @Mizzou leadership constantly attract controversy?

Choi and the pandemic, Loftin and faculty, Wolfe and protests, et al.

MO State’s @ClifSmart has remained at his helm while @Mizzou has churned through 5 chancellors.

I have a few theories... (1/7) https://twitter.com/eyokley/status/1303892092624797696
(1) Mizzou is close to Jeff City and increasingly reliant on political games to avoid budget cuts.

B/c of that, they faithfully follow the advice of their (mostly conservative) lobbyists.

They believe caving into student demands is a bad look for #moleg. Rock meet hard place.
(2) Most chancellors in my memory are implants, brought in from our-of-state, usually. Standard practice in higher ed, but MO is the Show-Me state and we see right through ambition and ladder stepping. It’s hard to coalesce and lead skeptics.
(3) The @mujschool. We have some of the most talented student reporters in the nation. These admins work under a large magnifying glass (as it should be) and have very little room for error.
(4) Mizzou has a storied tradition of protesting and pushing back against campus leadership:

The Columns stand today because of a protest; the Shantytown protests in the 1980s; the #CS1950 protests in 2015.

Mizzou students are active and willing to stand up against admins.
(5) Over the last decade, campus admins have lost focus of why Mizzou exists: Missouri students and county extension.

They’re too distracted by SEC football, donor-focused research initiatives, premium tuition from out-of-state students, and an expanding administrative base.
The takeaways?

(1) #MOleg is not our friend.
(2) Make @MUJimSpain chancellor already.
(3) Embrace the J School.
(4) Let students drive decisions.
(5) Remember the mission: students and the state.
