The proliferation of "political analysts" and "political correspondents" as the supreme caste of journalists and reporters is a crisis for the whole institution. They do nothing, provide no insight, and exist to sabotage the work of their peers in the name of providing "context."
They suction up salaries that could be used to hire many times their number of real, honest journalists doing the actual work of investigation, factfinding, and factchecking - people who provide value to the places they serve. They should be tossed out of the industry to a man.
They are almost all men, by the way. And almost all white. The supremacy of political punditry in journalism is how white men's prerogatives continue to control the industry, even while the rank and file of the industry workers become more diverse. They're occupying the heights.
