I’ve learned that so much of working remotely is about good, written communication. Here are a few tips I’ve found have worked for me. 🧵👇
🔢 When talking about multiple paths to take as a team, use numbered lists and refer to the each path by their number in subsequent messages. This avoids repetition and ensures everyone is talking about the same thing, not slightly reworded versions of an idea.
↪️ Speaking of numbers, if you’re using Slack, make sure each number is its own message so a separate thread can be started for each point.
📝 Recap at every chance you get. Every time you reach alignment, list the points you agree on and the ones that still need further discussion. Repeat until there is no more discussion to be had and clear next steps to take.
🎯 Semantics are important. Don’t use synonyms when you don’t have to. Avoid flowery language and hyperbole to mitigate confusion. Don't invent new terms or reference jargon that others may not be aware of. Try to be concise to not derail the conversation.
🙃 Find a way to make your peers smile as you’re discussion something serious. Remind them that the stakes are probably lower than they appear.
👺 Tone is really hard to infer over text. When possible, save constructive feedback for face-to-face interactions and use asynchronous communication for planning, sharing recaps, clarifying details, and documenting decisions.
💪 Move the conversation forward with every message. Avoid circular caveats like “that’s just my two cents” or “feel free to disagree.” State your opinion confidently or let others do so. The goal is to unlock a unified path forward, not the best path forward.
🤡 When in doubt, GIF. This might go without saying but, a GIF goes a long way in breaking the ice and lightening the mood. If you’re afraid of derailing the conversation, react to a message as a thread away from the main chat and add a bit of humor.
