🧵I have my views on SBOE races and surely you do too, but thought it'd be worth highlighting some really great answers to the @WTUTeacher questionnaire- not as endorsements- but answers we should HOLD all of them TO in the coming yrs! Some really positive signs of consensus...
There are A LOT of qualified candidates & some really positive signs:
✅ Near universal agreement on @DCSBOE having more authority, curtailing mayoral control
✅ Agreement on STAR rating needing serious reform
✅ Agreement on need for much more transparency
Here are highlights...
From @mysikix very important answers on stakeholder engagement and using the bully pulpit of the SBOE role to elevate issues.
From @RaviPerry4DC a really interesting and specific idea about how the SBOE can have weight in education budget decisions.
From @DC_Edvocate - two answers in which he highlights the teacher turnover crisis as a top priority and states very clearly how the STAR rating system does a disservices to our school communities, does not reflect their hard work and sets a pretext for damaging school closures.
Ward 2 candidate @AllisterChang calls for SBOE to have power to create legislation, not just approve it. Note: Currently @DCSBOE SBOE actually CAN actually send the Chairman of the council a bill to introduce, but doesn't have initiation authority with OSSE- which is critical.
Ward 2 candidate @jarharnett pushes for very strong SBOE oversight authority and to keep the transparency train moving forward by ensuring charter schools are subject to at least the same transparency requirements, especially w/ respect to Special Ed as DCPS.
Ward 2 candidate @Sarah_Mehrotra makes great points about the need to disaggregate SPED data & shine a light on how to better support schools & critically highlights how schools previously on track to close have turned around- showing the flaw in ratings used to advance closure.
Ward 7 candidate @Dontrell4SBOEW7 makes a really good, evidence-based argument for not having police in our schools.
Ward 7 candidate @Eboni_RoseT knows these issues like the back of her hand and describes very concisely and clearly how Mayoral Control isn't achieving equity and then in great detail how the SBOE's authority isn't enough and how it might be expanded.
Ward 8 candidate @CarleneDReid speaks from experience in education about the role state agencies should play in allowing more innovation in education and highlights our bifurcated as the number one challenge we face.
Ward 8 candidate @LaJoyLaw1 speaks passionately about how she believes the PARCC exam does a disservice to students with disabilities and also her support for more charter school transparency, something she's advocated for in the past.
This is by no means comprehensive, and everyone should go check out the @WTUTeacher questionnaires in full, learn about the candidates, ask hard questions about their positions, their record, their experience, their funding, their endorsements and a whole lot more!
