The thing I think that is most damning about the Woodward tapes is that they make clear that POTUS's bumbling buffoonery is a deliberate act and that underneath it, is a calculating, savvy, villain.
Yes. He is an inept president.
Yes. He is no good at governance
Yes. Civics and foreign policy elude him.

But the thing about "intelligence" is that it's domain specific.

And his domain is the art of the con.

His proficiency is the only reason you know his name.
I feel sometimes like people misunderstand con men in the same way they misunderstand hackers and phishers.

Sophistication isn't necessarily a factor.

Frequently brute force and sheer scope of effect is the primary tool.

You don't need the savviest to fall for it.
You know why you get email scams with misspellings and weird spacing and grammar that most people would immediately recognize as malicious spam?

Because it works anyway.

Not on YOU.

But on someone.

Enough someone's to make the endeavor worth it.
While you might be smugly mocking what is to you the clear work of an unintelligent individual with no sophistication, that individual is rolling in stolen dough.
As people ridicule and mock POTUS's lack of sophistication and intelligence, he has looted the American treasury to the tune of hundreds of millions funneled directly into his bank account.
Trump is an abject failure of a President.

But being President was never his goal.

His goal was making money and he's been doing that consistently since he entered the race.

So it's weird to judge him on a goal he didn't have but fail to recognize his success at the one he did
America is really tied up with a concept of "intelligence" that meets a really narrow definition.

Not only has this disenfranchised millions of talented people, but it is also why we dismiss acuity in areas we don't value, although it's no different.
America has been so fixated on how Trump doesn't meet their idea of intelligence that they've fatally underestimated his domain of expertise.

Which of course, is what he wanted.

"The stupider people think I am, the more surprised they'll be when I kill them."
