Today I picked up my new Naloxone/Narcan kit from a near by @ShopprsDrugMart to replace the one from my bike pannier I used last week. Let’s walk through what’s in a Naloxone Kit (this is the muscular injection version). #Nalxone #HarmReduction 1/7
This is what it looks like when you open it up (I added the mask due to #COVID19). As you can see, it’s small, but holds a lot of life saving things inside. 2/7
This one has 3 vials of Naloxone to inject IM (intramuscularly). This is 3 standard doses of Naloxone, so if the first is not successful or partially successful, we can give another 2 doses (the EMS dispatcher can walk you through this decision to give more than one dose). 3/7
We also have 3 IM needles to draw up and administer Naloxone. These ones are single use, ie, you can only draw something into them one time. We have one needle per vial. It’s best to give Naloxone in the outer thigh, but can also be given in the upper arm/deltoid. 4/7
Here we have some PPE. Gloves, alcohol swabs and and barrier valve for CPR to administer breaths. Now, with COVID-19, one should make a personal assessment as to their comfort doing CPR which is an aerosolizing procedure and should only be done by those with CPR training. 5/7
Finally, it comes with an instruction manual, which is handy to review periodically. But also, you will always have the 911 dispatcher to walk you through the steps, all you need to remember to make sure the scene is safe and to call 911! You are never alone. 6/7
