One entanglement btwn university & other police is the “mutual aid” that brings nearby forces to campus & vice versa; here are city riot cops getting their violence on against peaceful protestors ( @reclaimuc will recall this one)

Also it’s the same people. Jason Fletcher, San Leandro PD, murdered Steven Taylor this April: the first cop charged in a civilian killing in the Bay since Oscar Grant’s 2009 murder. He trained for that moment w/ 8 years at UCBPD.

The university regularly invites other policing agencies onto campus to terrorize people; these include ICE & Department of Homeland Security (formerly directed by the recently retired UC President)

But sometimes the relationship between campus & other policing is not that direct. To say that policing is structurally racist & classist, structurally violent, is to attend to the ways it cannot be reduced to individual episodes.

Even beyond UCB’s (supposedly race-blind) admissions policies, UC students & workers need a daily life free from terror in the local community. OPD makes sure that’s impossible for some people, shaping who is welcomed & who excluded.
