/5 The episode "Nosedive" presents a Utopian society through a social status lens. One attains success via ratings by colleagues, friends and family. Maintaining a high rating allows individuals to get their dream job, car, home and a perceived notion of happiness.
/5 Searchability was one of the affordances that persisted throughout the episode. Private information ceased to exist for those who conformed to the "system". The way that I looked at it was that their lives were a never ending live-stream.
/5 There was a tremendous amount of pressure for individuals to conform to a certain image, due in part to the scalability of the network. This led to a lack of individuality which was troublesome, taxing and cringe-worthy.
/5 This episode showed a very real picture of today's society. Individuals who let social media direct their lives become one-dimensional. In extreme cases, social media can become one's absolute reality, and override other means of communication.
/5 Social media can serve as a very resourceful and fun tool; however, it can also cut one off from reality. As Oscar Wilde once said "Everything in moderation, including moderation." #comm315 #315nosedive
