...Or for prison.

There was a rumor that my public high school was designed by an architect that designed prisons. Teachers sometimes reminding me (one of the few POC students) of this. They redid the bathrooms so they were open. You had no privacy and could see people pee. https://twitter.com/MarsinCharge/status/1302948903915008000
This was all under the guise that we would be "unproductive." This was with an 82 minute class period. There was one time a teacher denied me and I bled everywhere.
Even though you could see everyone's business, there was no talk of gender neutral restrooms (given I graduated in 2013, but it was not a safe space to be LGBTQ). We were treated as suspects and even surveilled while peeing- teachers would pop in to see "what we were up to"
Some male teachers used this to spy on the teenage girls in the bathroom. I heard rumors of them acting like COs, exchanging sexual favors (i.e. statutory rape and assault) for not snitching about a joint or something like that.
I'm by far not the first person to talk about the school to prison pipeline. Or how bathrooms are political.

But especially with these adhoc online systems, we gotta talk about how schools often police the most basic needs of kids, esp BIPOC.
