The right needs to have a reckoning with its past, especially on race. This simplistic account, shorn of any complexity or shades of grey, is not it. It repeats all the standard shibbolets we've heard the last four years a million times. https://thebulwark.com/nixons-deal-with-the-devil/
"Avi, why do you say that?"

Well, let's start with the BS belief that all evil emanates from the south. IRL, attacks on welfare and arguing for law and order (coded or not) worked just as well in other parts of the country as it did in Old Dixie.
IRL, also, law and order was something Black Americans themselves were demanding; cf. their support for the Crime Bill we now decry.
The idea that Obamacare was uniquely unpopular because it was advanced by a Black man is quaint and ignores the reality that EVERY attempt by politicians to change the health care status quo, successful or not, led to a backlash. Often a fierce one.
And Trump was so popular with the racists infesting the party that he won the primary with one of the smallest margins in modern political history. Yes, everyone fell in line afterwards, but if the party was really racist dominated, you'd expect a blowout, not this.
The labour left has been anti-immigrant ever since there was a labour left. Including in the 1920s. Bernie Sanders was plenty Trumpy on the issue a few years ago and last I checked he was the furthest thing from a bigot.
Also, the same W who pulled the Bob Jones BS appointed Black men and women to senior positions in his cabinet. Hardly a Wallace.
The old arrangement was that of Nixon - you give the "nuts" 20% and then you actually govern for normal people. For a long time it worked (whether morally right or not). 2016 was a perfect storm where it didn't.
Oh, and the claim that CA flipped blue in 1992 because of changing demographics is flat out false. Whites flipped it permanently blue, not Hispanics, legally present or not.
I welcome serious discussion of race and the GOP. Lots of people doing this. This article is one of those "Forgive me father for HE has sinned" type articles, and I'm sick of it.
