I’m still mad that Krug was talking about gangs matando a un muchachito a machetazo had ~revolutionary potential~ this woman was obsessed with killing black and brown kids. I hate her.
Abolition is not “snitches get stitches” for folks who pursue one of the very limited options offered to Bronx kids. It’s fixing a world that offers pipeline programs to policing rather than effective community based social services.
And it’s a bunch of ~radicals~ that love to posit a radicool potential for gangs. I will tell you that gangs perpetuate the worse forms of cis-het patriarchal violence. This isn’t radical, it’s HARM.
And I am saying this as a queer kid who grew up in the Bronx having to navigate my world where family was killed, jailed, deported, etc. that gang shit is for the birds. Period.
Some people will like to point out the Young Lords. And sure, but the young Lords platforms and politics had to go through constant revision, and reflection thanks in part to Black and women members. Because they perpetuated anti-black, sexist violence.
I am grateful for the work my teachers and mentors have done to HIGHLIGHT this. Most former Lords I’ve encountered my my life almost always say things like “we do not need another Young Lords party, ya can create something new, something better.”
