LGBT+ Education
When I was growing up there were no positive gay rolemodels. There were camp, effeminate, sexless men who were the butt of jokes and innuendo. 1.
Gay was a dirty word, a slur thrown around in the playground.
And all gay men were tarred with the same brush; sexually promiscuous, shouldn't be trusted around children.
It made me uncomfortable about my sexuality to the point where I didn't want to come out. 2.
I tried to be straight. Never could quite commit to that, thankfully. Came out as bi, then gay (shout out to my bi's, not trying to erase you, but I was that 'bi now, gay later' sterotype) 3.
Two things kept me from coming out. Prejudice against the LGBT+ community and the fear that I couldn't have a family, a healthy relationship. 4.
Things are better now. There is less prejudice (at least in the UK, and for gay men. The prejudice against trans people is, if anything, more violent than that against the LGB). 5.
But I do wonder what my life would have been like if I hadn't hidden for so long. If I hadn't tried to deny my sexuality. If I'd received an education on sex and gender. And if the bullies had that same education. 6.
The LGB Alliance are trying to deny children that education.
They are a hate group, not just targeting the trans community but the entire LGBT+ community. 7.
They are framing the likes of Stonewall and other charities that support trans youths as groomers, just as gay men were portrayed as paedophiles in the days of Section 28. 8.
It sickens me. If the LGBT+ community don't have each other's backs, then what is the point? If we don't support the most vulnerable in our community... 9.
Trans men and women who face the most prejudice, children who are bullied for their sexuality or gender identity, often before they've fully understood it themselves... 10.
Just unreasoning hatred. We should be lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. 11.
