"If the Liberals tried to decriminalize drugs they'd lose the election" is a hypothesis that centrists are risking and losing lives by assuming is true.
Now, as health experts, advocates, police chiefs, prosecutors, and others are increasingly vocal in support of decriminalization, that hypothesis looks increasingly *false*.
Also, think about what other issues folks have said the same thing about. Seriously.
Also, think about what other issues folks have said the same thing about. Seriously.
Day after day, as people suffer and die, there is just less and less reason not to decriminalize drugs -- unless, of course, you as a prime minister and government are opposed to the policy on principle.
Let's stop giving centrists the benefit of the doubt. It's not doing us sufficient good -- and, in fact, it's doing us a lot of harm.
Oh, also, if you're going to govern, at some point you should actually lead.
Put the opinion polls aside and do your job by leading opinion, rather than simply following it.
