I started my career as a freelancer & was inspired by things like @freelancersu as a possible path forward for workers to take back agency. I have tried to get places I’ve worked to band with other orgs to be able to offer more competitive insurance/other benefits–no dice.
I am concerned that a guild-like approach merely forces workers to adapt to this reality while allowing orgs to continue to abuse them, possibly with even less concern because the workers will habitually move on more frequently. I’d like to see the system overturned & built anew.
IIRC, guilds arose because there weren’t structures to protect workers. I want those structures to be built/reinforced. AND ALSO I think there is real benefit to workers forming these types of power blocks. So, I’m all over the place! And would welcome others’ thoughts.
As usual, let me refer you to @adriannerussell's excellent thread in response to the piece I linked in my first tweet. https://twitter.com/adriannerussell/status/1303761438389960707
