In the 50 years since its founding, NPR has failed to fully reflect the public it serves, and the persistent and overwhelming whiteness of NPR’s staff and management has prevented NPR from achieving its stated mission.

It’s time for action. https://wemakenpr.squarespace.com/dei-demands
Today, we are pledging to use our collective power to support people of color within our union and across NPR — both by changing our own practices and by presenting management with this list of demands related to racial and ethnic diversity.

Our demands include a mechanism for executive accountability; reporter/editor hiring plans; diverse hiring pools; new career development opportunities; greater source tracking support; analysis of the use of temporary employees; and more.

This plan also includes commitments from us, the union.

While the union has helped individuals with discrimination issues, it hasn't been sufficiently vocal or public in its support of Black, Brown, Indigenous and Asian employees — and that must change. https://wemakenpr.squarespace.com/dei-demands
We recognize the current economic crisis facing NPR could limit some immediate action, especially when it comes to hiring.

But these demands include a range of actions that can be taken at little to no cost, with an eye towards future, structural change. https://wemakenpr.squarespace.com/dei-demands
It's vital that NPR take meaningful steps to embrace change, not just for our own organization's sake, but for the entire public radio system.

The failures of NPR are echoed throughout public media, and NPR must serve as a model for fixing those failures. https://wemakenpr.squarespace.com/dei-demands
Transformation is both a moral and an existential imperative.

As our CEO John Lansing has acknowledged, the future of NPR is at stake.

NPR must change if it hopes to finally live up to its mission statement, and finally reflect the public it serves. https://wemakenpr.squarespace.com/dei-demands
