That feeling of doom when you’re under perpetually red-tinged darkened skies and the scent of smoke is inescapable is...

It’s a lot even without months of pandemic & protest & breakdown of social support systems.

Do the best you can, West Coast kin. Mask up & be ready to run.
Quick’n’dirty go bag tip:
What do you need to get through 24hrs?

What’s most essential to rebuild?

If you have time:
What will keep you calm while waiting?

You know how notoriously prepared parents of infants are with diaper bags? You want that for you.

If you’re at home and anxious, I wrote this thread in early-pandemic specifically for channeling that unease into prep.

It’s all things you can do NOW, for free, to be a bit more ready: https://twitter.com/mikamckinnon/status/1243941907375345664
The combo of smoke & pandemic is beyond shitastic for breathing.

Fitted no-valve N95s works for both, but... be careful. Inadequately filtering particles means huffing them deeper into lungs. Fit is VERY important. No beards!

Avoid breathing hard outdoors if at all feasible.
If you’re sheltering in place, you can use tape & plastic to improve window seals (electrical or painting tape leaves no residue if you rent).

Rolled towels help reduce ash coming in under doors without sealing you inside.

It’s ridiculously apocalyptic, but... it works.
If you’re told to evac, please do. Resources are even thinner than usual.

If you have special circumstances, consider leaving early.

If you don’t have transport... your options suck more than usual. Call local officials, but it’ll probably be groups. Mask up & sanitizer often.
With disasters, the more slack you have in the system, the more flexibility you have to allocate resources for emergencies. It’s akin to having follow-distance to safely stop suddenly.

COVID19 has taken a huge number of resources while imposing hard limits.

Our slack is shot.
For all of us, under threat from fire or not:
Our collective job is to refrain from doing stupid shit as our ongoing crises are using up all the slack in emergency management systems.

So very many people are doing stupid shit right now that it’s frustrating & overwhelming.
Evergreen reminders:

Think before you tweet.
Is what you want to say with someone’s life if you crowd a hashtag, boost bad information, or make disaster porn profitable? https://twitter.com/mikamckinnon/status/1298669508756819974
