This is what America has already learned about reopening univerisities. Yet here in the UK we are walking straight into the same minefield as if nothing has been learned. No universal testing, face to face teaching still going ahead...a predictable, avoidable disaster coming.
What is even more galling and frustrating is that UK unis, with their world class medical and biosciences infrastructure, have all the resources needed to prevent this. And they should be the institutions most culturally averse to magical thinking. Yet that's what we're getting.
Its not too late to prevent the same wave of campus infections hitting here. Universities and government could work together to put in place the intensive, systematic detection and mitigation infrastructure needed. But will they? I'm not hopeful.
