Why Rey Kenobi wouldn't make sense in The Rise of Skywalker [A THREAD]
Everyone believes the reason Rey Kenobi didn't happen was because of Rey Palpatine, when it was actually because of Rey "Nobody."
The Force Awakens brought a mystery about Rey's parentage and by the end of the film, we thought she was related to some heroic bloodline.
Then The Last Jedi came and told us Rey was not related to any famous character. She was a "nobody".
But why they made her a "nobody" in that film? So Rey could realize that her past doesn't define who she is. She wants to someone to show her the place, but she needs to realize she is the answer.
And so she did. She realized she was the hero and found her belonging within the Resistance. In 30 minutes, Rey's character is entirely solved in The Last Jedi. Leaving nothing behind to delevop about her.
By the way, I wrote another thread about why Rey Nobody would not be interesting in the third film: https://twitter.com/flilisoffexegol/status/1297865280522158081
Move on to The Rise of Skywalker: Rey already knows she is the hero, she has a teacher, she is totally part of the Resistance. We need something to take her out of her comfort zone: This is why we need to revisit her past.
But just think for a second: Does Rey Kenobi'd take Rey out of the comfort zone? No. She is a Jedi and now she is the descendant of one? Really? How does this create any kind of conflict? You giving what she wanted in TLJ THE WAY she wanted.
This'd be a thematical betrayal to The Last Jedi. Giving Rey a positive answer and making her being defined by it. With her as a Palpatine, this doesn't happen.
Because it not only gives her a negative answer, a conflict, it makes her central to the plot, which gives her back the protagonism she almost lost in VIII and brings a new message: Some things are stronger than blood.
Palpatine represents the opposite of everything that is her. It's different from Luke Skywalker who says: "I'm a Jedi like my father before me." Palpatine says: "I'm all the Sith" and she says: "I'm all the Jedi." He says: "Empress Palpatine" and she says: "Rey Skywalker."
With Rey Kenobi, you have an extension of Obi-Wan. Something that'd be ok if The Last Jedi didn't made it clear that Rey doesn't depend of her past. But it did, so, screw it and enjoy the Rey's journey we have (It's cool, trust me). May The Force be with you.
