Expanding live experiences: The #digital future of #theatre @FinInstLondon

Matt Adams from @blasttheory: The reason we decided to work with digital tools is to reflect the lives we are actually living now, we are all digital natives, we are all living hybrid digital experiences
Associate Programmer @AmyLetman from @battersea_arts: We are thinking of hybrid formats [in theatre] that might happen both physically and digitally.
Theatre artist @mariaoiva: we were not forced to use digital tools, we were using digi theatre because of the content, not because of the situation [Covid-19] we are in right now.
. @mariaoiva: What we need to do is to try and see possibilities that we can achieve through digital tools [in theatre]. Different communities can be created via #digital platforms.
. @mariaoiva further discusses the notion of "reality" and the criticism towards #digital #theatre:
"'This is not real, this is not performance' but at the moment we are live in this performance."
Matt Adams @blasttheory: For us learning about #gamedesign was critical. It is an #interactive experience between the players and the #game. You have to create an environment in which the player learns what to do, and if designed successfully, the player loses the sense of time.
"Here we have a new form of theatre, and it has its codes. We have to design specific codes for digital theatre. We are doing live performances, and how do we invite people, and how do we engage them? It's not easy." @mariaoiva
Associate Programmer @AmyLetman of @battersea_arts: I think it could take a decade for classical theatres to go back to business as usual. We have to start thinking differently now.
Artistic Director of @LIFTfestival @krisanthenum: A shift is happening; we've got this new playfield and a lot of people might not know how to play. The #Zoom wall has been broken.
#onlinetheatre #digitaltheatre #onlineaudience
Matt Adams @blasttheory: A lot of people [in theatre] might think that they are going to reach a greater audience via online platforms but that is not how it works. It is a lot harder and it requires a completely different way of thinking about audiences. #digitalaudience
On #digitalaudience: @mariaoiva @digiteatteri: Digital communities are real communities. The Internet has been space for minorities. Who is the audience? And I'm aware of the problematics of the bigger live stage, but there are more voices now to be heard comparing to the past.
Artistic Director of @LIFTfestival @krisanthenum: The pandemic is going to be here for a long time, social distancing is going to be here for a long time. Monetizing the digital space will change, and the audience will change.
#digitaltheatre
Matt Adams @blasttheory on monetizing digital space: Google is Monopoly. It's a systematic challenge and we need a systematic approach in finding new models and advocate the idea of paying for #theatre online.
Although *live* theatre is significantly challenged by #COVID19 I am impressed by how forward-looking and solution-oriented you are thinking about the digital future of theatre. Thank you🙂 @JaakkoN @FinInstLondon @blasttheory @krisanthenum @LIFTfestival @digiteatteri @AmyLetman
