Three episodes in with Lovecraft Country.
So, Lovecraft did a lot for the horror genre. But his work was permeated by his racism, to the point where a lot of it is simply inescapable. Authors have been trying to divorce his contributions to horror from his racism for decades.
I kinda love this show. It not only confronts those elements in Lovecraft's writing, but turns it on its head. Where so much of Lovecraft's writing is about fear of the other, the source of fear in this show is the abusive nature of white society.
The best thing is, the show totally stays true to what many horror authors have decided to be Lovecraft's biggest contributions to horror, too! All the tropes - cults, cursed books, sinister towns full of people who want to do you harm - they're all there, front and centre!
