He became part of something bigger than himself, for the good of his country.
He learned to overcome immense physical and mental challenges.
He got to travel and see the wold from a larger perspective.
He also found a way to pay for college without student loans.

Now that he completed his enlistment, he is going to college. The GI bill along with other benefits allows him to also receive a monthly income while in school.
Doesn’t sound like a sucker to me, sounds like a smart, brave kid making a great life for himself.
