There is no meritocracy in academia and if job candidates want one of the very few jobs, they most likely will not work in the field they did their work in. It hasn't been that way for decades. If you get a job it's because you know someone or are lucky. 1/ https://twitter.com/surliertexan/status/1303705687776780288
My father-in-law and my father, who got their jobs in the 1950s and 1960s had choices and married up. No more. Flexibility and breadth is what makes a difference, not the research one produces. 2/
If we need to do our research separate from our teaching we will need two lives: one for us and one for us-and-them. It's essential to acknowledge that if we want to be "academics" that definition needs to change for the vast majority of us. 3/
It needs to be about social issues, people's lives, the economy, textbooks over $50, having three jobs, and what we can do for our students and institution. If no one will teach us, and they don't often (no one taught me) we must do it for ourselves. 4/
And by "ourselves" I mean "with the help of others." We are not islands: ask for help, see what is new, make connections, contact, and take charge. Help is there. Finis/
