Mitch, you’re showing a distinct lack of knowledge of what you’re referring to, as well as generalizing a subject because of the negative stereotype of extremists, while also just flat out insulting people. It’s dickish. https://twitter.com/mitchkosterman/status/1303364283758080002
Like, for starters, fanfiction has been around for hundreds of years. So has fanart: have you seen the Sistine Chapel? And, hate to burst your bubble but Supernatural is fanfiction. It's a transformative work based on other works. Dante's Inferno is self-insert fanfiction.
The Hobbit is fanfiction.
Achilles and Patroclus date back to Greek mythology and the Illiad. Spock and Kirk are from the 60's. Don't get me started on the Biblical ships, like Jesus and Mary Magdalene, and the people still arguing what's canon or not.

Shipping is the emotional investment in the future well-being & happiness of two chars in a romantic relationship. Romeo and Juliet. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy. Buffy and Angel. Crowley and Aziraphale. Dean and Castiel.
They're all ships. Shipping refers to if you LIKE the pairing.

'Slash' ships/shipping is a signifier. It differentiates heterosexual pairings, same-sex pairings (regardless is wlw or mlm), or platonic relationships.
Sam x Ruby, Dean/Castiel, Dean & Sam.
There are also names for ships or dynamics (platonic). Destiel vs Team Free Will.

Depending on the dynamics, the same characters in different paradigms determine name and nature of the relationship.
Team Free Will = Dean, Sam, and Cas; platonic
WinCasWin= Dean/Cas + Sam/Cas but no Dean/Sam; poly
Wincestiel= Dean/Sam/Cas; poly
Team Free Will = Dean, Sam, and Cas; platonic
WinCasWin= Dean/Cas + Sam/Cas but no Dean/Sam; poly

That's just fictional characters.
Fanfiction involving real people is called Real Person Fiction (RPF), or if focused on pairing two 'chars' in a same-sex relationship, Real Person Slash (RPS).
There's also a genre of fic known as Self-Insert. Yeah, I said GENRE.

"Anybody have any fic recs?"
"Sure what kind do you want?"
Canon & canon-divergent are self- explanatory
Alternate canon: Boys raised by Mary/boys born girls
Alternate Universe: the supernatural doesn't exist
Curtain fic: domestic, slice of life
Fusion fic: TFW in HP verse, no HP

There's horror, dark, romance, rom-com, drama, romantic-drama, thriller, alternate seasons, comedy, family-focused, found family, kid fic, Happily Ever After, Main Character Death, Sad Ending, Temporary Death, character study, character-centric, holiday fic, smut/erotica, etc.
Something can involve love scenes but that doesn't make it smut any more than a fiction book with a love scene would be or a movie with a love scene. It's a story element used in a variety of ways, same as, say, foreshadowing.
Just because something is fanfiction doesn't mean it's bad or poorly written. I've written numerous fics better than books. Many published authors/showrunners first started writing by writing fanfiction. Many of them STILL DO. Fucking hell, S.E. Hinton has written SPN fic.
Every comic, tie-in novel, or spin-off series is fanfiction if not written by the hand that originally created it, they're just officially recognized transformative works. Every "Inspired by" movie or show is fanfiction.
Fandom is the gathering of fans with interests in the same thing who want to celebrate their shared love of a thing.
Aka: Bible fandom. Sports fandoms (broken into subcategories of the sport, then further by team). Gaming fandom. TV media fandom.

Transformative fiction (aka fanfiction) has a long history. Online fanfiction is predominately compromised of works written by minorities who do not see themselves represented in media. That's one of the major catalyst behind transformative works.
Yes, there are extremist fans and 'stans' (stalker fans), but to generalize is harmful, callous, arrogant, and shows ignorance and lack of empathy.
Fandom is, and has always been, a safe space for minorities to express and SEE themselves represented in their fave chars.

"There aren't any queer characters in this show. We want more representation!"
"Then go write your own!"
"Okay."
"No, wait, not like that!"
Get the fuck bent and mind your own damn yard. Your homophobia, misogyny, arrogance, ignorance, and ass are showing.
