Like, for starters, fanfiction has been around for hundreds of years. So has fanart: have you seen the Sistine Chapel? And, hate to burst your bubble but Supernatural is fanfiction. It's a transformative work based on other works. Dante's Inferno is self-insert fanfiction.

There's horror, dark, romance, rom-com, drama, romantic-drama, thriller, alternate seasons, comedy, family-focused, found family, kid fic, Happily Ever After, Main Character Death, Sad Ending, Temporary Death, character study, character-centric, holiday fic, smut/erotica, etc.
Something can involve love scenes but that doesn't make it smut any more than a fiction book with a love scene would be or a movie with a love scene. It's a story element used in a variety of ways, same as, say, foreshadowing.
Just because something is fanfiction doesn't mean it's bad or poorly written. I've written numerous fics better than books. Many published authors/showrunners first started writing by writing fanfiction. Many of them STILL DO. Fucking hell, S.E. Hinton has written SPN fic.

Transformative fiction (aka fanfiction) has a long history. Online fanfiction is predominately compromised of works written by minorities who do not see themselves represented in media. That's one of the major catalyst behind transformative works.
Yes, there are extremist fans and 'stans' (stalker fans), but to generalize is harmful, callous, arrogant, and shows ignorance and lack of empathy.
